Hey everybody, I'm looking for someone who can help me out about a show I want to track down. It was a show in the late 70's (76-79?) in chapel hill, north carolina, the site of the University of North Carolina. I think the show was at the Dean Smith Center. Does anyone know of any shows in chapel hill around this time? If so, do you know the date? Thanks for any help on the subject, this is a pretty sentimental show for me.

As your famed alum Charles Kuralt said, "They invented Duke so Dick Nixon would have a place to study constitutional law."

Then again, I grew up going to NC State Basketball camp (in the Norm Sloan era) so I have two deeply ingrained reasons to cheer against the baby blue...

Basketball (and football, but who are we kidding?) aside, I actually don't have anything against Duke, and wouldn't mind living in Durham again. Duke did get an unreasonable number of Dead shows over the years. I suppose Carmicheal auditorium being acoustic hell may have been a factor.

Thats OK. We can read all of those shiny CHAMPIONSHIP TROPHYS that seem to be collecting on a regular basis. To the original post the Dean Smith arena didn't open until 1987 and prior to that they played at Carmichael Arena so maybe you can find a show there or Greensboro.

I don't know about that, but when I was in high school in Georgia the application for UGa was a 3 by 5 index card - name, address, GPA, SAT score, and that was it. And Herschel Walker was the best back I ever saw play college ball (though Earl Campbell wasn't bad).

Va Tech - horrible story to start the new year. Those folks have suffered far too much.

Just senseless...

It seems like it never stops doesn't it? My daughter finished grad school in May and is now back home (and employed). She remarked how she and her friends went to Jefferson National Forest all the time.

Could be a rough football season for the Hokies - they lost their starting RB a few weeks back with a blown out ACL. Kid was a true freshman and dominated last year - 253 yards against Maryland and MVP of Tech's bowl game. The three backups have 38 carries and 88 yards between them - and that's skewed because two of them are true freshmen this year. At least the defense will show up, but Carolina looks like the team to beat now.

Actually, David Wilson is the only true freshman likely to see any carries this year. Ryan Williams is a redshirt freshman and Josh Oglesby is a redshirt sophomore, but you're right that Oglesby is the only one with any game experience.

I see a three way race in the Coastal between VT, Carloina, and Georgia Tech.

Didn't Oglesby hurt his ankle last week? My daughter is a sports nut and she keeps us updated on a near daily basis. She is good friends with Orion Martin and Vince Hall - they had Master's classes together - she told me Orion just signed with Detroit and hopefully will get some playing time. He's a real good kid and a pleasure to talk with.

She just told me that Williams red shirt might come off if Oglesby can't go Saturday.

Aww hell, at least Foster's D will keep them in the game.

Can't wait for "Enter Sandman" at the Nebraska game.

Williams used his redshirt as a true freshman last year, so he'll be on he field at some point. Oglesby has had heel and hamstring problems the last week or two, and Wilson has had injury problems as well. With Evans already gone, I cringe every time I hear anything about one of these guys getting banged up.

My guess is that whoever winds up listed as the starter, Oglesby and Williams will split the lions share of the carries. Wilson is the most talked about freshman at VT since Kevin Jones but I'm not sure they're quite ready to take the wrapper off him yet.

Either way it's going to be tough going- Alabama's run D is absolutely monstrous.

I'd LOVE to have Martin back this year and hope he does well in the pros.

Lacrosse, not rugby. Yea, Durham District Attorney Nifong did one hell of a job on that case. Then again, his folks went to Duke and he went UNC undergrad and law school. I'm sure that had nothing to do with the way it played out.

Wondering if Jesse and Al are still going to pay for that poor girl's schooling?

That said, I'm firmly in the camp that believes the Duke pres, Broadhead, should have been canned for how he handled it. I know fundraising took a major hit. The guys were no angels, but they got hung out to dry by the school and the DA's office.

Are you SERIOUS!?! Our "intelligence" agencies do precisely THAT with great regularity...we often pay for information that is old hat, spend massive amts on info of little use, and in general, just try to keep everyone employed doing something, independent of "actionable intelligence" outcomes.

It's THE American way!

Now, that said, we've pulled off some decent cladestine activities...it's just that I wouldn't imagine "fiscal efficiency" is one of our hallmarks.

Guess you missed the announcement last week where USB (formerly the Bank of Switzerland) agreed to release the names of 4250 (of 52000) randomly generated US account holders to the Justice Department and IRS for the purpose of tracking down illegal tax evaders with offshore accounts.

DOJ and IRS have announced amnesty for any account holder who discloses their account(s) and subjects themselves to future tax filings. Those who don't and get caught, STFB.

So do you roll the dice and hope that you aren't one of the 4250 account holders disclosed? Or do you fess up and start paying taxes?

Not that it's going to matter when China and Japan stop underwriting ouor National debt with T bill purchases and the dollar goes to zero..........

Its not about money - the way of life you describe sounds like hell! Without a base in reality (however tenuous at times) life would be unbearable - i like meeting different people, putting in a bit of work, and having a bit of inconveniance or hardship - it makes the times we spend with our friends and our family and in our favourite places listening to the Grateful Dead, or whoever, with good food and drink all the more pleasurable.

I doubt any deadheads idea of paradise is a tropical island personally i'd prefer somewhere in san francisco or colorado, or my beloved Surrey. And my kids are gonna work hard for what they want too.

My bad. Lacrosse. If you recall, that was around the same time that Don Imus was tarred, feathered and run out of town on a rail. I stayed very busy writing OP-ED pieces, not defending Imus or the actions of the Duke boys, but cautioning that it appeared as if the power of the media would be the ultimate arbiter in these cases. With Imus it was, with the Duke boys, luckily it was not.

The Duke story had all the juice the media could possibly feed on, and they were bound and determined to show vigilante justice to the Duke players. It's ironic that the story died without a whimper when the truth became clear. Nevertheless, our wonderful fourth estate still left a trail of damage in it's wake and never once did they make mention that they were wrong in pushing the story to their own desired conclusion.
